Home security experts have advised homeowners to take extra precautions to protect their property during the holiday season, when crime rates typically increase.
Alison Peckham, a home security expert at MyJobQuote.co.uk, provided a range of recommendations to enhance home safety and security.
“With homes filled with valuable gifts and families away visiting family, it’s important to take extra precautions to protect your home and belongings,” Peckham said.
One key recommendation was to secure all doors, as many burglars enter properties through unlocked front doors.
“Inspect all of your exterior doors and make sure the hinges are protected, the door frames are strong and check the letter box flap to ensure the door can’t be unlocked by someone reaching in through the letter box,” Peckham advised.
She suggested upgrading to smart locks, adding strike plates, installing deadbolts, and using video doorbells to boost door security.
Window security was also highlighted as crucial, with Peckham recommending proper locks and additional measures such as window bars or security film.
Exterior lighting was cited as an effective deterrent for intruders.
“Place lights around the front of your home, in your back garden, along pathways, and near the garage or any other structures,” Peckham said.
The expert strongly recommended installing a security system, noting that there are options available for every budget and level of protection.
“Most burglars will avoid houses that clearly have alarm systems in place,” Peckham stated.
Other recommendations included securing garages, protecting Wi-Fi networks, eliminating potential hiding spaces around the property, and installing security cameras.
Peckham also advised on fire prevention measures and provided a room-by-room security checklist for homeowners to follow.
The expert emphasised that implementing these security measures doesn’t have to be overwhelming.
“Take some time to figure out which strategies are most important to you, and then make a plan to add the rest at a later date,” Peckham concluded.
